^Coal and raw material convoys are critical to the British economy and must continue

^The Boulton-Paul Defiant entered service with the RAF in June 1940 over France. This
^unique aircraft was built around the premise that the pilot was too busy flying the
^plane to also fire at the enemy... Therefore a gunner was seated behing the pilot in a
^power-operated turret armed with 4 Browning .303 machine guns. This was done in lieu of
^the 8 wing-mounted Brownings used on Spitfires and Hurricanes.
^Initially the design appeared very promising taking a heavy toll on German fighters, who
^probably mistook the Defiant for a Hurricane and carelessly approached it from the rear.
^However the success was short lived and soon the Defiant's shortcomings in speed and agility
^made them easy prey for the German Me109s.
